Coaching Requirements
USA/MAHA COACHING REQUIREMENTS
COACHES MUST COMPLETE ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS BELOW BEFORE THEY TAKE THE ICE FOR PRACTICE/PLACEMENTS.
In order to coach, you must complete all steps listed below. Deadlines are listed for each and are not negotiable. We are governed by District 9, MN Hockey and USA Hockey, and they dictate when each of these needs to be completed. You MUST ensure that you have everything completed on time or you will not be allowed to coach. You will not be reimbursed for any fees if you do not do all steps.

- SafeSport Training
- Screening and Background Check (every 2 years)
- Age Specific Modules
- Concussion Form signed (every year) & concussion training (every 2 years)
- Current CEP Certification

STEP 1:
Complete MAHA Coaching Application
Required every year.
*Deadline: Prior to first team practice
STEP 2:
USA Hockey registration is required for all players and coaches who take the ice. This is effectively your insurance that helps cover medical expenses in the event of a hockey related injury.

(MAHA will reimburse USA Hockey fee as long as all registration requirements have been met).
STEP 3:
USA Hockey Required Training - Follow the step below. 👇
#1 SAFE SPORT
Required every year.

Safesport is an online module to help coaches and volunteers become aware of the information necessary to help prevent abuse from occurring in our sport.
#2 BACKGROUND SCREENING
Required every 2 years.
*Deadline: Prior to first team practice
The cost is $30. MAHA will reimburse the USA Hockey Background check fee (every two years) for coaches as long as all registration requirements have been met.
All adult coaches, officials, board members, employees, volunteers, and anyone else who will have regular contact with, or authority over, athletes under the age of 18 are required to submit to a background screen through NCSI before any such contact with those athletes.
#3 AGE-SPECIFIC MODULES
Make sure to check your status every year.

In addition to your coaching certification, USA Hockey requires that coaches complete training modules for both the specific age of players that you will be coaching and another one covering player safety. You only have to take each module once.
#4 CONCUSSION TRAINING
Required every year.
*Deadline: Prior to first team practice
Step 1: Concussion Training. Required every 2 years. Please reference Requirements Check to see if training is required. Complete concussion training via one of the following options:
- USA Hockey online age modules
- The Center for Disease Control
- National Federation of State High School Associations
Step 2: Sign concussion form
Step 3: Upload proof of concussion training along with signed concussion form here.
#5 CEP CERTIFICATION
Make sure to check status every year. Can sign up for in person OR virtual classes available in any state.
*Deadline: December 31st
- U8/Mites - only need Level 1
- Traveling - Level 2 or 3 (Valid for 1 year). Obtain next level certification prior to expiration.
- Traveling - Level 4 and 5 - complete 5 continuing education credits prior to expiration.
*Exempt - any level 4 and 5 coaches who obtained their certification prior to Jan 1, 2021.
