We are excited that our community has noticed the extreme shortage of indoor ice and the poor ice facilities here in Mankato and we appreciate the investment into indoor ice. We will continue working towards developing a solution to the substantial shortage of indoor ice for all users of indoor ice in our community and one that will make a more significant impact in our ice shortage issue.
While the proposed 3 on 3 rink in the Shopko space is a very good addition to Mankato, the specialized 3 on 3 rink doesn’t independently meet the needs of our community. The half-sized 3 on 3 rink meets a very specialized niche market within the hockey community and does little for MAHA and the vast majority of the community members that encompass the 61 user groups of indoor ice in our community. These 61 user groups include public skating, Learn to Skate, Figure Skating Club, MAHA, Boys and Girls High School teams, Family skate nights, etc.
We will continue to work with the joint partners with ASA and other supporters of improving our indoor recreation facilities, to find a solution to the indoor ice needs for the kids and families in our community. Further, there was a feasibility study completed in November of 2013 by the National Association of Sports Commissions which stated our community could support 2 additional full indoor ice sheets, so while adding a half sheet of ice is a welcomed addition, it does little to address the overall need. MAHA alone has increased the number of participants since the time of that feasibility study by 31% and the shortage of ice continues to get worse.

MAHA’s stance on bad weather accounts for parents to make an ultimate decision on behalf of the child. All Seasons Arena typically does not close due to poor weather, therefore MAHA does not cancel practice on poor weather days, even if school is called. However, any practices being held on days school is let out due to weather are considered “optional”, yet coaches will attend the practice time for anyone wishing to attend. Players missing such practices will NOT be subject to any team rule sanctions.
In the case of school cancellations, all non-district games will automatically be cancelled. In the case of district games, teams must follow the District 9 policy, which calls for both teams agreeing to cancel a game before it can be cancelled.
